Scientists have found that sugar “wakes” cancer cells and makes tumors more aggressive.
The results of a nine-year research project in Belgium that has been published in Nature Communications magazine are considered key to cancer research, as scientists finally clarify the effect of the Warburg Effect – a phenomenon in which cancer cells quickly decompose sugars and thus stimulate the growth of tumor.
The project started in 2008, with an emphasis on how tumors turn the amount of sugar into lactate relative to healthy tissue. Until now, it was not known if it was a symptom or cause of cancer.
This study provides evidence of positive correlations between sugar and oncogenic potential in cancerous cells.
“Our research reveals how hyperactive consumption of sugar in carcinogens leads to a vicious cycle of continued stimulation of cancer development and growth. It therefore explains the connection between the strength of the Warburg effect and the aggressiveness of the tumor, “says Professor Johan Tevevelen.
The researchers believe that these results have comprehensive consequences and can be the basis for future research in this area, but also affect the diet adjustments for cancer patients.
